How to choose a Level 2 EV charger

Level 2 is AC charging from a dedicated charger. The charger supplies AC power and the car's own onboard charger converts it to DC for the battery, so your charging speed is the lowest of three numbers: the charger's rating, your electricity supply and the car's onboard charger.

  • Check your car's AC limit. Many electric cars sold in India accept 3.3 kW or 7.2 kW on AC, and some accept 11 kW or more. The owner's manual lists it as the onboard charger rating.
  • Check your supply. A single-phase connection supports up to 7.4 kW (32 A at 230 V). 11 kW and 22 kW need a three-phase supply at 16 A or 32 A per phase.
  • Decide who will charge. At home, plug-and-charge is simplest. In a housing society, office or car park, RFID cards, an app and OCPP software control who can charge and bill each user for the energy used.
Charging time from 20% to 80% At the power the car accepts, assuming 90% charging efficiency. Charging slows above 80%.

Installing an AC charger

  • A dedicated circuit from the distribution board, with a correctly rated breaker and cable for the charger's current.
  • Sound earthing. The charger's residual current device (RCD) cuts the supply on leakage; a Type B RCD also detects DC leakage.
  • A wall or post within reach of the parking bay, away from standing water. Outdoor models are rated IP54 to IP65.
  • In a housing society, the society or resident welfare association can apply to the DISCOM for a separate metered connection for EV charging, as allowed by the Ministry of Power's 2024 EV charging guidelines.

Charging in housing societies and offices

Shared parking works best with networked chargers. Each resident or employee starts a session with an RFID card or the app, the energy used is recorded per user, and the charger management software bills it. Load balancing shares the available supply between cars, so more chargers can run on the same connection.

Safety checklist

  • Residual current protection (Type A or Type B), surge, over- and under-voltage, and over-temperature protection.
  • An enclosure rated for where it will be installed: IP54 or better outdoors.
  • A cable long enough to reach the car's inlet without strain, and a holder to keep it off the floor.
  • Ask for test reports and certificates for the model you buy.

Ask on WhatsApp

What is a Level 2 EV charger?

A Level 2 charger is a dedicated AC charger, usually from 3.3 to 22 kW, installed at a home, housing society, office or car park. It is faster and safer for daily charging than a plain wall socket, and the car's onboard charger converts the AC power for the battery.

Will a 22 kW charger charge my car at 22 kW?

Only if the car accepts it. On AC the car's onboard charger sets the limit, and many cars sold in India accept 3.3 kW or 7.2 kW. Charging runs at the lower of the charger's and the car's rating, so check your car's AC limit before choosing.

How long does it take to charge an electric car at home?

Taking a 40 kWh battery from 20% to 80% takes about 3 hours 45 minutes at 7.2 kW and about 8 hours at 3.3 kW. The table on this page gives times for other battery sizes and power levels.

Do I need single-phase or three-phase supply?

Up to 7.4 kW (32 A) runs on single phase, which most homes have. 11 kW and 22 kW need a three-phase supply at 16 A or 32 A per phase. Your electrician or DISCOM can confirm your sanctioned load.

Can I install an EV charger in my apartment or housing society?

Yes. Chargers can be installed in residential parking with the society's approval, and the Ministry of Power's 2024 guidelines let housing societies and resident welfare associations apply for a separate metered EV charging connection. Networked models with RFID and OCPP bill each resident for their own energy.

Will a Teslavolts AC charger work with my car?

Yes, if your car has a Type 2 (or CCS2) charging inlet, which is the standard on electric cars sold in India from Tata Motors, Mahindra, JSW MG Motor, Hyundai, Kia, BYD and other brands. Type 1 and GB/T guns are available for older imports.

Is a portable EV charger safe for everyday use?

Yes, when it is plugged into a correctly rated, earthed socket on its own circuit. Teslavolts portable chargers have residual current, surge and over-temperature protection in an IP65 control box, and the Portable Pro uses a Type B RCD.

How do I buy and what warranty do I get?

Choose a model and press Buy now. You pay by UPI QR or bank transfer, enter the payment reference and confirm. Prices include GST. Portable, Home and Smart Pro chargers carry a 2-year warranty.
